Kai is more of an introverted type, with no friends and no hobbies. He recently moved to the sleepy fishing town of Hinashi with his divorced father. He only really has fun when he creates his music on his laptop and publishes it on the Internet as “Merman”. When his classmates Yuho and Kunio find out that Kai is behind the pseudonym, they are desperate to get him to join their band Seirèn. But he is much more interested in the old legends about Hinashi's mermaids. Nevertheless, he can be persuaded to rehearse with the band on Mermaid Island. When his music attracts one of these creatures, Kai can hardly believe what he is seeing - and hearing. So begins a tentative friendship that will change Kai and all of Hinashi. In the fantasy adventure by the innovative anime director Masaaki Yuasa, lively music is combined with funny visuals to create bubbling film fun with depth.
